 Klein-Waller describes his process this way: In my work I am attempting to explore ideas of silence, time, place, consciousness, and mortality. I often break these concepts down in to binaries, such as absence and presence, then through my work I attempt to portray both at the same time, creating an area in between the two.

Gibson describes her process this way: The visual outcome of my inquiries are influenced by nature, cosmology and other science fields intervined with conceptual associations of consciousness. Connection and disconnection are held in mutual tension; chaos and clarity interacts between forms and forces.

Castle describes the creative process this way: We use the creative process as a means of allowing light to permeate the outer layer of our personal discovery. As we create, our conscious and unconscious mind work together to form the expression that we then use as a solution to many questions we ask.

Taal describes his work this way: The works depict isolated structures existing within nameless locations that verge on void spaces. The structures are ambiguous, undefined, and have reference to shadows and silhouettes.

Announcing the Winner of the $10,000 Eldon & Anne Foote

Edmonton Visual Arts Prize!

Great visual art was produced and shown within the greater Edmonton region in 2012. Evidence of this was revealed in the quality of the submissions to the 2013 Eldon & Anne Foote Edmonton Visual Arts Prize. 

In the Prize’s second year, an independent jury composed of three art professionals from outside the Edmonton area (Wayne Baerwaldt, Tanya Harnett, and David LaRiviere), evaluated the submissions and short-listed three artists. The short-listed artists were: Allen Ball, Isla Burns, and Paul Freeman. The winner was announced at 7:30pm on June 20th, 2013 during a reception at Visual Arts Alberta Gallery celebrating its summer exhibition, the opening of The Works Festival, and the summer solstice.

Paul Freeman, nominated by the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA), was announced as the winner of the $10,000 prize. The AGA nominated him for his work, “It’s Only Natural”, an installation that speaks to current tensions and anxieties about genetic manipulation.

The Eldon & Anne Foote Edmonton Visual Arts Prize was established with the generous support of the Eldon & Anne Foote Fund at Edmonton Community Foundation and in partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council and Visual Arts Alberta Association. This Visual Arts Prize is an award that celebrates the brilliance of visual artists in Edmonton. Artists can be nominated for the Prize by galleries that showed at least one work by the artist in the year of the prize. A Call for Entry for the 2014 Prize will be announced later this year.

Wozniewich says of her work: My current body of work aims to find a balance between the edge of darkness and the delicacy of Victorian ladies, using doilies as a platform and elevating it through process and natural phenomena to create intimate moments of a sublime nature.
