ACAD in Edmonton

Jake Klein-Waller, To Fall on Your Sword, fallen branch, matte photo print, silver, rocks, 42” x 25” x
50”, 2013

Klein-Waller describes his process this way: In my work I am attempting to explore ideas of silence, time, place, consciousness, and mortality. I often break these concepts down in to binaries, such as absence and presence, then through my work I attempt to portray both at the same time, creating an area in between the two.

The winner was announced at 7:30pm on June 20th, 2013 during a reception at Visual Arts Alberta Gallery celebrating its summer exhibition, the opening of The Works Festival, and the summer solstice.

Paul Freeman, nominated by the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA), was announced as the winner of the $10,000 prize. The AGA nominated him for his work, “It’s Only Natural”, an installation that speaks to current tensions and anxieties about genetic manipulation.
