Linda Craddock: Hometown Dreams

Linda Craddock, from the series "Hometown Dreams: Sky and Sea",
mixed media, photo, oil on birch panel

Craddock says of this work: None of us live exclusively in the present.  What we understand as being “now” is in fact an amalgamation of personal and collective experiences interacting with a current framework of existence.  This defines who we are.  An increasing level of interest in both personal and social memory has resulted in an investigation of the past history and memories of that part of Alberta within which I was raised, namely the rural area of East Central Alberta. The conflict between conscious memory, subconscious memory and reality form the framework for my work.

View "Hometown Dreams" from March 20th until May 3rd, 2014 at the Visual Arts Alberta Gallery. Running concurrently in the gallery is Shyra Desouza's "Labyrinth of the Eternal Archetype". The gallery is open from 10-4 pm on Wed-Fri and 12-4pm on Sat. Please note the gallery will be closed on April 18 & 19.

Shyra Desouza: Labyrinth of the Eternal Archetype

Shyra Desouza, "Labyrinth of the Eternal Archetype", detail

Desouza says of her work: Old canons collapse and continually fold into themselves like a fractal that repeatedly feeds the remainder back into the equation, with their forms repeatedly reinterpreted; context has become content.  Objects of status often rely on forms related to a system of classical rationality, but leave us without personal meaning.  Mysticism and pseudo-science fills the space where knowledge ends and the personal begins, creating a space that is both intimate and impersonal.  Exploring the symbolic and emotional connections between people and objects, I wish to present an open-ended narrative where sensual and rational experience intersects.   This work embodies the utopic melancholy induced by the continual disconnection between form and meaning.

Craddock & De Souza: Hometown Dreams & Labyrinth of the Eternal Archetype

Join us for the opening reception of Linda Craddock & Shyra De Souza tonight Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 7-9:30 pm at Visual Arts Alberta Gallery (3rd Floor, 10215-112 St. in Edmonton).

Craddock’s rural Alberta community provides subject and metaphor for her paintings. The conflict between conscious memory, subconscious memory and reality form the framework for her work. See Craddock's work in Gallery A.

In her Installation, De Souza uses/manipulates found objects and recognizable imagery to create a sense of the uncanny: a tension between our desire for the easily identifiable and the unknown. De Souza's work is exhibited in Gallery B.

View Hometown Dreams and Labyrinth of the Eternal Archetype from March 20 until May 3, 2014. Visual Arts Alberta Gallery is open from Wed-Fri, 10am-4pm and Sat, 12-4pm. Please note, the gallery will be closed on April 18 & 19, 2014.
